Reviewer: Jennifer Fidler,
I have been looking for a good solution for my sound system. I don't want to go all out just yet with a 1500 system, but I don't want a crappy Insignia system. This is without a doubt a better than expected solution. I use this for Satellite and watching movies on my computer and my iPod. It brought a whole new life to my living room.

1000 watts is more than enough juice for a medium size living room, the bass is flawless and very powerful, I eventually had to turn it down. I does very good Dolby 5.1. The center speaker is loud enough, I do not have a problem not hearing diaglogue with music or action is going on in a movie.

The remote is very handy and easy to use. Yeah yeah, it's one more remote for the house but the ease of switching the surround mode and device is simple.

I highly reccommend these speakers, you will not be disappointed.
iPhone 3G kinda works

Like the other reviewers I am impressed with the sound of this unit- though I wouldn't call myself a committed audiophile. I bought mine at a local "big box" store before I saw that Amazon had it on sale- either way great value- so I am giving it 5 stars. I bought this unit for listening to TV/music while in bed. I was pleasantly surprised- I am listening to Pandora music out of an iPhone 3G directly inserted into the iPod dock.

While it is in the dock some of the functions from the included remote work like skip to the next tune. I don't think the iPhone 3G can be charged in this cradle, but that is Apple's fault for changing their charging scheme. Apple makes their own 3G dock for like $40 which lets you charge and plug the music-out into "AUX 2" ... other than the iPod dock, but you lose some of the remote usefulness this unit only comes with 2 audio inputs.

TIP: I have a Motorola "universal" remote that came from Verizon called DRC800. The `philips' codes didn't work, manually I discovered that DVD/VCR code 0539 allows you to mute the unit or skip songs. Volume and power don't work so don't waste your time it's not really compatible with this unit, so plan on buying a real universal remote. I like the Logitech USB's `cause they get new codes from the web.

Good: Value Price, iPod dock, Sound, setup was easy

Bad: No earphone jack, only 2 RCA inputs, not fully compatible with iPhone 3G, only came with a single RCA cable, speaker wires are permanently attached and not RCA, no video in, cheap universals won't necessarily work.

I'm saying three bills because of the following:

You'll need speaker stands/mounts, HDMI/ optical/ coaxial cables, and possibly a converter box.

For the optimum experience the speakers need to be set up right or you end up missing some of the sound. The stands and mounts take care of that.

HDMI cables are pretty much a no brainer and because there is only one you will need either a coaxial cable or a converter like another reviewer stated. I think my set up is the same. HDMI to TV with optical audio out from cable box to converter which becomes coaxial digital in back to receiver. Having this information beforehand made the installation pretty straightforward and painless.

This Philips HTIB is powerful and although it is lacking a manual EQ it has a handful of preset sound modes that push out a nice spectrum of tunes. The one add on that is not permanent is my PS3. The inconvenience with the PS3 setup is it uses the same optical line as the cable box (optical to digital)to the receiver.

Yes the speaker wires are thin but I don't believe it would make a discernible difference if they were any thicker. By the way, these wires are thin enough to slip behind baseboards without making it too difficult. The lengths of the speaker wires may be questionable but for my set up in a 12 X 15 room the length of wire feels about right. I think the disk tray as others have mentioned is weird. When it is opened at the receiver it seems to take quite awhile. But when I open the tray via the remote it seems to open a lot quicker.

I have used the receiver for music and it does well to pick up stations. The remote whether using it for a disc or radio surfing, has been very easy to use.

In reading other reviews I was concerned with the rats nest of cables associated with a system like this and thus looked into sound bars. I'm glad that I stuck with this because the little amount of wire/cables running on the sidelines is a small sacrifice instead of having to give up 5.1 channels for something like 3.1 that cost more.

This system also has an amazing upconversion. Cars, Matrix reloaded, Nemo, 300 (as with many other systems a little grainy), Shrek(s), Happy Feet, all look incredibly detailed. This is definitely a theater system the whole family can enjoy.
Excellent product for the price

Do not expect it to give you a $1000 quality. But for the price it comes at, this product is just amazing. The installation was easy and sound quality is extremely nice. For less than $200, you certainly cannot ask for more. So, the bottomline is, if you do not want to spend $600 or $700 or more, then simply go for this. This will give you the same quality as a Sony or Panasonic which would cost you more than $300. And you get the additional advantange of a direct USB connection. Highly recommended.
Great System For The Price

After doing some online and local department store research I found this system has most of the features found on the more expensive models for about half the price.
I received my system within a week from ordering through Amazon and set it up in my bedroom which took only about an hour. The instructions were easy to follow, and there's plenty of speaker wire to easily seperate around a medium sized room.
Be sure to buy yourself a HDMI cable, there isn't one with this system.I suggest getting a brand name HDMI cable and not a cheap generic no-name brand. The picture quality with this system is excellent.
This system has plenty of power and you can adjust each speaker through the receiver to your personal preference.I was amazed with the sound quality with using both DVD's and CD's.The subwoffer really explodes the bass and you can feel it.
The remote is easy to use and I recommend reading the instruction manual especially when you want to adjust the speakers power and the built in equalizer for music type.
I gave this a 5 star rating, and I think it's the best purchase I've ever made with Amazon.
Wonderfull sound

I can not say enough kudo's on this product. Although we get crackles from either local interference or cable feedback ...sound is outstanding and the choices of audio mixes with t.v., cable, DVD player and game station are wonderful. It's ability to multiple load different devices is fantastic. Great product.

I bought it at Wal-Mart for $199, sound is great as good as the $500 Sony I have on the other TV. The up-scaling DVD player makes a regular DVD look like HD. Only thing I don't like is it does not have an auto set up like the Sony. The Sony you set an included mic where you set, push a button and it sets all the speakers up, this one you have to set all volumes one at a time manually.
Love this system

I was looking for a system that it is not complicated (like a home theater receiver with bunch of connections, and only radio) but that satisfied my basic needs, an all in one compact design, I love that I can play my DVDs from other countries (you can change that through the remote control) in my 53" screen, the usb port works very nice and I use it to play all Divx files, and it upscales the quality and we get dolby (tested with Transformers). Now for the speakers I have a nice set JBL CS480BG -which double the price of the system, but as I said it I didn't want complications- and I just cut the Proprietary connectors from the speakers and attached them to mine, the sound is amazing since the device is 1000 watts. For the sound I bought a converter box for digital optical, but I noticed that I really didn't need it although the sound is bridging from the cable receiver to the TV and then goes to the home theater, when we watch movies in HDTV channels we can hear dolby pretty clear; Now definitely I couldn't set the universal remote control the way it should be, but I have the Sony RM-VL600 and it has the capability to "Learn" so I did set it very well key by key. Overall I think it is a good option for someone who hates to have many devices and it is on budget.
Great Value

I read numerous reviews before purchasing this item, and I am very pleased with the quality (as usual for Philips) and the sound it produces. The fact that there's no manual sound equalization is a minus, but one you can easily live with. Otherwise the system performs very well and to expectation. The item was new as promised and shipping very fast (standard shipping); the response on my questions were very speedy. Definitely recommend both product and seller.
Awesome

I just bought this system last week to replace a Samsung system that "died" on me. I'm already very impressed. I like the preset equalizer settings as it makes it easier for me to switch from one to another depending on what I'm watching. I was also able to hook it up to my cable box/DVR to get 5.1 sound while I watch regular TV. I like the "Night" setting as it keeps the dialog hearable but the music/sound effects don't overpower while watching movies at night. I've had my upstairs neighbor come down and ask me to turn the volume down on my old system because it made the walls vibrate when watching a loud action movie like Dark Knight or Pirates of the Carribbean.

I only have 2 minor complaints.

1. The rear speaker wires are too short. For the left rear speaker, I had to let the wire sit across my living room floor. Luckily I have a rug that covers part of it.

2. I'm hearing impaired and the DVD player is supposed to be able to read closed-captioning on discs, but for some reason it isn't even though I turned that feature on in the setup/options menu. Luckily most DVDs now have English subtitles, but some older ones only have regular closed-captioning like on TV.

Other than that, I am really happy with this system. It even comes with a separate dock for your iPod (works with just about every iPod model out there).
pretty awsome

I purchased this unit for $139 for a refurbished model. When it arrived i opened the box there was barely no way of telling it was a refurbushed unit. everything was nice and clean. came with standard rca cable, remote, and all necessary wires to hook it up. The bass sounds excellent for the price of the system. i'm 15 and this system was in the perfect price range for my room. i have my 32" philips tv hooked up to it as well as my computer. It works excellent. it plays cd's fine, i havent used it to play dvds yet bc i already have a blu-ray player. Ipod dock is very handy. more than enough sound for my 12 by 12 room. When i played music with the volume all the way up for 20 minutes it made a bad burning smell. i turned it back down and it was ok. Doesnt seem to be doing it anymore when i turn it up though. perhaps it was just a break in thing.
AWESOME deal, EXCELLENT seller!

Reviewer: Evast3,
I did a lot research before finally buying this home theatre system. I have to say I don't know what impressed me more, the product or Tech for Less! The first system they sent, the player itself was in fair condition, scratch/small dent and the disc player stuck when ejecting. I contacted Tech for Less and within three day's they sent me a replacement, and didn't require that I send the broken one back!! The replacement was in almost brand new condition! Liked the system so much, ended up ordering another for my son's room. He was so excited and installation is fairly easy no matter what components need to be installed. Tech for Less is my new found online shopping store I will go to first for all my electronic needs!!
Great unit

If you looking for a nice sounding system for a small price this is the one. I have to say I upgraded the speakers and it has taken this system to new level. Because of the arrangement in my room I have a Bose Acoustimass 3 Series IV speaker system in front and Polk Audio RC65i 2-Way in-wall speakers in the back. The center channel speaker is a a Yamaha NS-C225 2-Way Acoustic Suspension center channel speaker. This setup sound awesome!!! Keep in mind a good center channel speaker is very important. The picture is also great with the upconvert. Save money on new dvds.
Good quality for what you pay

This is a very practical purchase. It is a good price for the quality. That said, I haven't myself had any issues with the DVD player and hopefully this review doesn't jinx me. Have owned for between 1 to 1.5 years.

-Pros-
1 Price is right
2 I do enjoy the picture quality (upscaling) of the DVDs
3 Very easy to set up and I don't have to mess with it (turn it off/on)
4 I like the remote - has a one touch surround button to go from party to dolby surround mode
5 I don't use it much, but the radio clarity/quality is good
6 Coxial Digital Audio input

-Cons-
1 Can't change many setting from the front panel you have to go into the video setup menu
2 Can't change individual channel levels on the fly (have to go into the video setup)
3 I don't get a convincing feel for sound behind me - this might be an issue with my room setup though
4 No optical input or HDMI output (although these are easy to work around but may cost a little extra in adapters or converter boxes)

-Additional Notes-
1 Party mode - good for stereo input (laptop mic out) or radio - it puts out level volume across the channels
2 Power cuts - I did have an issue with it being buggy after a storm once - none of my other electronics had a problem but I had to play with it (leave it unplugged for an hour) before it returned to its usual self
3 Hear popping or crackling every now then if it on but no audio is playing

This was more a stop gap purchase for me as I didn't want to buy a blu ray player at the time. I will transition into full HD audio in the future (waiting for HD aduio receivers to get cheaper that support DTS HD Master Audio) but didn't want to spend much now.

Hope this helps!
Very good for the money

Bought this awhile ago, and have had absolutely no problems with it at all. The sound is great and the amount of inputs are ample. The only problem I had with it is the rear speaker wires are a little shorter than I needed. I simply added some wire to them and it is perfect. Would be even better if the option to make them wireless was available. Good system for the price.
