A good lens for the price

This lens is not the ultimate lens for a DSLR camera. Nevertheless I think is a good choice as a matter of fact the quality is beyond my previous expectations. In my recent trip to South Africa I was able to take beautiful pictures with this lens even if I think that I need a wide angle lens.
A great entry level DT telephoto lens

The SAL55200 SAM is probably the most affordable telephoto zoom lens being offered by Sony at the moment. The model has replaced the more powerful SAL75300 lens in Sony's more recent dual-lens camera packages. The lens can be found bundled with dual-lens packages for Sony alpha bodies such as the DSLR-230, DSLR-290, DSLR-330, DSLR-380, DSLR-390, DSLR-450, DSLR-500 and the DSLR-550.

Despite the price of the lens and its lack of reach compared to the SAL75300, and the fact that it only supports APS-C sensors, the optical performance of this affordable zoom more than makes it a worthy accessory to any hobbyist and enthusiast. Purple fringing is visible at higher focal lengths along strong constrasting edges, but the effect is very well controlled. The lens works beautifully under moderate sunlit conditions, and the reach of the lens makes it a great portrait lens when the subject is camera shy. At focal lengths between 150-200mm, the compressed perspective and increased perceived defocusing will bring out the subject beautifully while pushing the background into a haze without any obvious color distortions, typical of a good quality DSLR telephoto lens.

Unfortunately for most of us, the single lens package with the SAL1855 is more common for most newer Sony DSLR packages. Since the upgrade price from the single lens package to the dual lens package is usually bewteen 60 to 100 dollars, I would advice anyone who is out to get their first Sony DSLR (or a replacement unit) to get their hands on this lens as part of a dual-lens package. Totally worth the money.
