I have always loved macro photography and I was using another lens that wasn't a full macro. This one is Sonys first dedicated macro at an affordable price. It does not disappoint! With a minimum focus distance of 4.1 inches you can get very close. Both my friends and myself are amazed at the quality of the pictures.

I have used this twice since I purchased it, and both times I have been impressed with the sharp results I have achieved. I have only hand held it during this test period, and even then it has performed very well. I love the depth of field. I would definitely recommend this for anyone's camera bag.
Great Lens

This is the first dedicated, specialized Macro lens I have ever bought, and I am not disappointed. It is lightweight, focuses easily, automatically or manually, the images are sharp and detailed, and the price is low.
Great little lens

This 30mm 2.8 lens is an excellent macro and indoor lens. I'd love to have wider aperture but for the money this is unbeatable. Very happy with the quality.
Prompt delivery. Just what i asked for.

A High Quality And Affordable Macro Lens

The SAL30M28 is the most affordable macro lens from Sony. Priced at 200 dollars, it's an unbelievably affordable macro lens compared to the SAL50M28 and the SAL100M28.

Having the same aperture as the SAL50 and SAL100, the SAL30 is a bright lens, making it easy for you to shoot small objects without the need to attach macro lighting on your DSLR. Most of the time, an external flash is more than adequate to light up the subject.

The SAL30 has a minimum focal distance of about 12.9 cm / 0.42 feet from the sensor, which effectively allows you to place the lens almost directly over the subject since the lens barrel and camera body is about 9cm long. Shooting insects and small live creatures at this distance is impossible, since they will no doubt fly away, and at this distance, the shadows of the lens will fall on the subject.

The SAL50 and SAL100's additional focal lenghts overcome these problems, allowing you to shoot your shy subjects from a more comfortable distance while achieving that 1:1 magnification. However, as with zoom photography, macro photography is prone to camera shake. Therefore, the shorter focal length of the SAL30 helps in reducing this effect.

The lens has a manual focus switch, so when you're using manual focus, instead of switching the manual switch on your camera, you slide the AF/MF switch on the lens to the MF position. The focusing gear is disengaged from the lens and the camera is informed by the built-in circuity that you're shooting using manual focus.

The lens is made of mostly plastic, which probably helps Sony in achieving the low price tag. The zooming ring is rubberized and has a generous rotation for you to fine tune your focus when shooting up close.

The SAL30 may not have the best focal length for certain types of macro photography, but with it's rediculously low price point, it's a lens that's hard for any Sony Alpha enthusiast to resist. It's a great macro lens for shooting still life.
